During the summer season, Pershing Square offers free movies on Friday nights and free concerts on Saturday nights. J & I have never caught a movie there since we have a projector at home and keep missing the start of the movies, but we have checked out their shows on Saturday nights. The last one we saw, which was the first concert for this summer season, was A Flock of Seagulls. We’re huge 80s fans, so that was fun!
The stage is set up on the north-east side of the park and you get the financial buildings for a backdrop. In front of the stage is a lawn and you can sit on the lawn or bring lawn chairs. There are also a few food trucks and stands that sell food in case you get hungry or want a snack.
J & I were surprised at the turn out. I had originally thought that people were in attendance because they were local and/or it was a free concert because the crowd was very mellow at first. The band played a few of their new songs to start, but when they went into their hit songs, i.e. “The More You Live, the More You Love,” “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You),” and of course, “I Ran (So Far Away),” the crowd went wild! People even bum-rushed the stage and all the phones and cameras came out to take photos and videos of the performance! It was wild, but so fun! My favorite was when they performed, “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).” What’s your favorite A Flock of Seagulls song??
Tonight’s concert, Saturday, July 30th is 10,000 Maniacs and Sultans of Mambo. Check out the Pershing Square Downtown Stage 2011 Summer Series’ website for a full listing and more summer events!
